Karaoke Night with Jason Underhill's Sing your heart out - corrupted pop entertainment with unsettling undertones. Programmed by Hyunjoo Byeon.

View fragments from our interview with Jason Underhill.

Jason talks about his relationship to London...

Hyunjoo Beyon's statement:
Jason Underhill holds a karaoke night called 'Sing Your Heart Out' (2008). 'Sing Your Heart Out' is carried out by a recreated karaoke piece that consists of two different monitors for both the singer and the viewer. The work is activated when the viewer moves beyond the role of voyeur and in doing so the artist literalises art's function as interrelation by encouraging the viewer's participation. Whilst transforming the viewer's role in a gallery, Underhill also initiates a subtle disruptive relation between the spectator and the karaoke participant, between the public and the individual, through projecting two disparate videos on the two screens. By generating a discerning interval, Underhill reconfigures the meaning of communication between one and others in an artwork. In addition, the artist's deliberate selection of the list of songs which exaggerates the features of karaoke explores the boundary between art and entertainment culture critically yet humorously. In 'Sing Your Heart Out' the selection of songs exposes consumer culture in capitalist society, and consequently questions the problematic entertainment culture and anonymity in society.
