Future Re-enactment for the Unwittingly Involved

Matthew Stone organized an event that almost went un-noticed, last year. It was called 'Future Re-enactment for the Unwittingly Involved', and was a grounding experiment for what would have been his works to come. The idea was to force the future into the present moment - defining the future as a projection of aspirations and dreams but with the firm will to materialize it.
The future was introduced with a private event on 13 July 2007 at Union Gallery's Teesdale Street space, where Matthew and some close friends tried their best to think through what they would want to happen(in the future), and do it (now).

Future Re-enactment for the Unwittingly Involved - Part One.

Dearest Participants,

We thirteen are gathering upon the evening of Friday the 13th of July 2007 at 9pm as the instigators of a two-part narrative.

It is my intention that we should convene to delicately lead each other and ourselves through what is an as yet unknown territory. However it may not be foreign in entirety, it is my instinct that upon this not entirely incidental and collective journey, there may well be many landmarks and willowy lights that we each recognise in passing. For different minds cast different shadows and I feel we must confidently let our own bodies describe and light the path of each other's when and where we see them.

I am keen to state that it is my absolute and resolute intuition that everything we have and are about to experience is in no way beyond our own personal understanding on some level.

We stand/lie here united in infinite possibility. One thing I would ask that we take constant moments to stay mindful and soulful of the endless repercussions and interconnected echoes our actions will inevitably take.

By way of an initiation at the beginning of the evening, cheap champagne and expensive tequila will be served.

Yours truly,

Matthew STONE

Five days later, on the 18 July 2007, a disoriented public poured into the gallery space as the remnants of the previous event poured onto them - they were confronted by detritus and heavily edited film, as well as their own expectations.

Future Re-enactment for the Unwittingly Involved - Part Two.

Dearest Participants,

We are gathering upon the evening of Wednesday the 18th of July 2007 between the hours of 6pm and 9pm to conclude a two-part narrative.

An event occurred here upon the evening of Friday the 13th of which you can see the detritus and documentation.

The events of tonight are of equal importance/triviality.

It is my intention that we should convene to delicately lead each other and ourselves through what is an as yet unknown territory. Matthew currently runs a weekly Art Salon for friends and people, where discussions take place around a different theme each time: there is no programming that sets the issues, as the conversations try to faithfully respond to the environment they develop from. The salon can be seen as an unfolding of 'Future Re-enactment for the Unwittingly Involved', by trying to conquer the 'moment', the present, the instant of action, complete awareness and change – little by little. Yet the thrill of the 'event' and of the 'new' is sacrificed in favour of effort, participation and dedication.

We are here trying to re-contextualize 'Future Re-enactment for the Unwittingly Involved' through the organization of the documentation and the memories attached to it - in order not to lose it in a time warp...
